Episode 484
What if the part of your Human Design chart you’ve been told is your biggest weakness is actually one of your greatest strengths?
In this episode, Nicole challenges one of the most common beliefs in Human Design: that open centers are simply places where we’re vulnerable to conditioning. While openness can certainly pull us away from alignment, Nicole explores a different perspective—one that reveals the hidden potential, wisdom, and genius that can emerge when we learn to work with these centers in a healthy and empowered way. If you’ve ever felt limited by what you’ve been told about your chart, this conversation may help you see yourself through an entirely new lens.
Drawing from her experience creating the Integrated Human Design Certification, Nicole shares how revisiting the foundations of the system led her to rethink the way open centers are often taught. Through personal stories and powerful examples, she illustrates how openness can become a source of insight, influence, and unique contribution rather than something to fear, fix, or overcome.
You’ll also hear why so many people struggle to access the gifts in their design—even when they understand the theory—and the crucial difference between knowing Human Design intellectually and actually living it. Along the way, Nicole explores how strategy, authority, and real-world experience help unlock the wisdom that already exists within you.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your open centers are holding you back, this episode offers a refreshing perspective. You may discover that the very places you’ve been taught to distrust are actually where some of your greatest opportunities for growth, impact, and self-expression are waiting to be found.

Episode 484:
Hello and welcome to Unshakeable with Human Design. I’m your host, Nicole Laino, and we’re here together today. And there’s been so much on my mind. I’ve honestly, I’m wondering if you’re feeling this too. There’s so much in the energy that’s shifting. And then we launched the Integrated Human Design certification a few weeks ago. So I have been deep in my journey of kind of revisiting all of this knowledge.
And it’s so interesting for me going back to the basics, because when I developed the certification, I had to sort of revisit everything that I’ve ever learned about human design and really look at how I teach this, because I do it so intuitively at this point where when I’m working with somebody, it’s just I’m listening for certain things and I’m paying attention to certain things, and I’m hearing certain things from that person, and then I know exactly what’s happening in the chart and how to guide them. I had to revisit everything and come back to the basics to figure out how do I teach somebody else this? And this isn’t an episode about that. This is actually just one of the aspects that I have noticed that people get wrong.
And as I was explaining it and the reason that I came to that conclusion that people get it wrong. One, I see it every day. But it’s also when I went to go and teach it, there was so much context I had to give to this, and there’s so much around this subject that seems confusing. And my job was to sit there and was like, how do I make this really clear? How do I show them how this works? How do I get them to relate to this aspect of human design in an empowering way? Because ultimately, I think that’s the one of the big shifts with human design now is that, you know, when human Design started with RA in, I believe it was 1987 or something, you know, he was on a mission to shock people.
He was on a mission to alert people to the not self, because he saw it. And it is. It is the thing that is going to take you away from being yourself, because that’s essentially what human design is. It is you being you exactly as you were meant to be. Now, his idea of that and his way of seeing that, I do believe has evolved since that original conception, that original way of him looking at it. I think that a lot of people have started to work with this system in different ways. And while he saw problems and he saw the not self, I think other people, myself included, found it beneficial to see not just the not self, it’s important, but also to see the potential, because that’s without just calling it wisdom, because that’s. And I get why he did it.
You keep it broad because you can’t tell somebody what exactly their wisdom is going to be. Right? I don’t know. I’m not you. And that’s, I think, one of the big challenges with human design and the way that people explain it now, people explain it like they can tell you exactly what your offer is going to be, who you are, what you should go after. And that’s not giving your power away to somebody else. So that’s not it either. We can guide you in the right direction. And that’s what human design guides are here for. That’s why it’s beyond just a reading. It’s a reading. And you give people their process and then you’re guiding them back to their process because they will deviate from it because they’re not used to living this way. That’s the benefit of having somebody guide you.
That’s the benefit of really immersing yourself in this, either with somebody walking beside you and. And helping to guide you back to yourself and to your process, or you are in some sort of formal or informal study of it where you’re like, I’m committing myself to getting good at this. It’s just like if you’re used to eating a certain way and you have to lose weight, you’re going to learn to eat a different way. You’re going to learn to add exercise into your plan. You’re going to adjust your habits and your way of life in order to suit the goal. With human design, the goal is just to be yourself. The goal is to be more aligned. Unfortunately, a lot of times we don’t look at that as the most important goal. And that’s why people put their labels on this.
That’s why human design teachers and coaches and stuff are like, I could tell you what your offers are because that’s how we compare that goal of you making more money and you being more successful with human design. And while that can happen, you can certainly understand more about what you would be great at in business through your human design chart, but it’s through living it. I just don’t love the way how it’s been sold to a lot of people in recent times. I’ve always tried to be really careful to let people know that this is a byproduct of living in alignment. It isn’t necessarily where the chart can tell you that, oh, you should be a real estate agent, but you might have some aspects of your design that have you drawn to beauty and to making things beautiful.
So that might be why you can really tell someone how to stage their home. And you can be really artful in the way that you market it. And you can walk someone through a home and you could really paint a picture of what life will be like there for them. That would be in someone’s design. But that’s that person’s life plus the design. It’s not. It’s who that person is and what they are drawn to. So I’m going to what I want to do in this episode, I want to talk about specifically the potential of Open Centers. The potential and the genius that lives in the Open Center. And I want to go beyond just calling it wisdom. I want to drill into what this can look like. It doesn’t have to look this way, and that’s the important part.
If I give you an example, it doesn’t mean that it has to look that way for you. And I’m going to use an example in take one of the centers, and I’m going to give you an example of how this showed up and how it showed up in its wisdom and give you kind of a breakdown there. I’ll use myself as an example, and then I’m going to use a famous person as an example and just kind of break this down where hopefully this becomes clear what this concept is and how you really work with this. And I will also, I’m going to let you know what’s the thing standing in most people’s way of actually living in these gifts in that genius and really being able to draw people to them. Okay, before we start, I do have a guide for this.
I put together a guide if you’re interested in how to use your Open Centers as a source of wisdom and how to grow into that wisdom. I did break down what the wisdom can look like for each of these centers just as like a little cheat sheet guide for you to understand as you’re going through life. If you need to refer to something, I think that it really does help to See them all in front of you. Feel you’re interested in that, just DM me the word “Undefined” on Instagram. I’m @nicolelainoofficial or go to nicolelaino.com/undefined and you can download it there. Okay, so let’s dive in. So, open centers. We’re all taught that this is the not self, right? This is the thing that’s going to pull you away from being yourself.

It’s going to pull you away from your truth, this openness. And that’s not true. It is true that it is the most seductive parts of us remember where we’re open. It’s where we receive. It’s where we pull things in. It’s where we are kind of magnetized to other people. We are kind of mysterious in these ways because we have so many different ways of kind of experiencing this stuff. Somebody who is open emotionally, you know, they might be very different emotionally with different people, and they can mirror back the emotions of others, which might be really cool for somebody to experience what that’s like. There’s such an interesting, unique aspect to all of our openness. Why? Because it’s so different from everybody else. It’s so different. It’s why projectors are so seductive when they’re in their power.
Because 70% of the world has a defined sacral. So when you stand next to a projector, you’re like, you’re different. What are you? You’re so different than me. You feel so different. Like, I feel that around projectors, I’m drawn to them. Obviously. You’ve heard me talk about, like, my whole life, I’m just surrounded by projectors. But it’s also. I’ve just always found them fascinating, and I’ve always been drawn into their energy because it’s so different. It’s such a contrast to mine. Now, it doesn’t mean that I don’t love my own energy. I do. But I feel into a projector, I’m like, oh, there’s such. There’s such focus here. I don’t have that focus. My energy is moving and wants to move different places. That’s their genius if they can really be in it.
Because I can also feel when a projector is, like, all kind of short circuiting on the fact that they’re trying to keep up and they don’t have anything left in the battery and they haven’t for a long time. That’s an undefined sacral. That is not in alignment. It don’t feel good. That one is not seductive that is not magnetic, as they say, that one doesn’t feel good to anybody else. You’re not drawing anybody that you want into your orbit in that type of energy if you are a projector. But if you are in alignment, you’re going to find that people are just like, I feel like I need some of this in my life. The generators are going to be like, I’m kind of all over the place. You seem really focused. I think I maybe need your help. Hello, invitation.
This is how it works. But you have to be in that genius. The thing that stands in the way of most people living in their potential versus being pulled in by the not self or pulled away by the not self is the fact that they are not living it. They are thinking about it. They know it, but they’re not doing it. And nothing counts if you know it, but you aren’t doing it. There has to be action met with it. There has to be a life and practice behind these theories and thoughts. It’s also how you’ll prove to yourself that it really works is to live it. And you’ll be like, oh, wow, I really do see how this is changing my life. So let’s dive into some of the examples.
I’m going to start with me and then I’m going to move on to somebody who’s famous. And so it’s completely separate from me. But I want to talk about myself just because I can talk about my own experience of going through this disempowered to empowered place in my openness. So I have three centers open in my design or undefined in my design, I have an undefined head, an open ajna and an undefined root. Okay. Everything else in my chart, all the other centers are defined. Okay? So I’m like colored in all through here. And then I’ve got the two pressure centers and then the mind undefined.
If you’ve listened to the show for even a couple of episodes, you’ve probably heard mention that my conscious sun and my conscious earth are Gate 64 and Gate 63, which sit in the head center, which is open in my design. So of the three centers and that are open in my design, my sun and earth sit in one of those. And it happens to be a pressure center, which is hard. And normally when we hear about the head center, we hear defined head center people. Those people. You’re here to inspire others because you have these inspiring thoughts, because your thoughts have power. And I remember hearing that and being like, oh shit, there goes my Main gift because it sits in this open center, because it is.
You know, to hear Ra talk about it, he’s just like, oh, God, these people that have a 64 in their conscious son, wow, are they in trouble? Oh, my God. They’re just confused all the time. They just never get it. They got their head in the clouds and, you know, they’re completely sucked in by the program. And I thought I was doomed when I first heard this. I was like, oh, well, there goes my potential. Because mindset’s an openness, and openness isn’t the thing. Because that’s what traditional human design says. It says that definition is you. Everything that open, it’s open is not you. And you’re never going to be able to use any of that stuff. They talk about wisdom, but they don’t really get into that necessarily. They kind of leave it at that.
You can develop wisdom there, and then sort of that’s the end of it. What I have found is that by me. So the open head center is about the not self of it is to think about things and ponder questions that are not mine to answer. So how do we determine if a question is mine to answer or not? Well, one. Does it have any bearing on my life? But I’m a manifesting generator, so I don’t know. Does it turn me on? If it turns me on? I’m also a one line. I love to investigate stuff. So how do I turn this head center off? Like, I am obsessed with learning things.
And honestly, I think that’s sort of my path to everything because I’m a 1 and I’m a 5, and if the 1 isn’t aligned, then the 5 isn’t going to be aligned. And none of this is making sense. There’s all of this direction that is contradicting the other direction that I get from this system. That’s how I felt in the beginning. And this was something that I had to revisit all over again. As I was preparing to teach other people this system. I really wanted to adhere to the bones of what the integrity of the traditional human design system. I did not want to, like, rewrite the whole system as I say it, because it’s still this. I still teach this, and I honor it and I respect it. But I also recognize how it doesn’t always help people actually live in alignment.
The way that it’s explained reengage with all of this stuff. Asked myself a lot of questions and went back to the drawing board on everything. And then in our live sessions that we do together. I’m like, well, okay, well, how do I workshop this so they actually get it? Because there’s so much more to this than just, like, talk and saying wisdom. Wisdom did me no good. Like, telling me, like, you can develop wisdom here I was just like, how? Tell me. I can’t think about anything. I can’t ask answer questions. I can’t investigate things. I can’t. I think too much. There’s all of these things that made it feel very disempowering. So I had to come back to that. So that’s how I arrived at, you know, revisiting all of this.
I rewent through my whole process of, like, my journey with this over the last six to seven years. Now, where I landed with this. I do inspire people. I am here for inspiring people. Now. What I inspire them to is different than a lot of people. That’s my thing. I’m a manifesting generator. What turns me on? If something turns me on, if there is something, I don’t think that it is the not self for me to ponder questions like, how do I explain this to other people who desire to have this knowledge that I want to pass my knowledge onto? I think that is a question for me to answer. I think it does matter for me, you know, how I know. I get super excited when thinking about it. This has been my whole life since I found it in six years ago.
And I love it. And I love it all the time. And it’s so exciting. And it’s always something new and I can always go deeper and I always have a new realization. And because I think about things the way that I think about them, because I approach it the way that I do, I have the ability to be inspiring. Why? Because I started confused. Because that is how I experience Head center inspiration. It comes through confusion. It comes through doubt. Because I have walked that journey of confusion and doubt, I now can have clarity and I can inspire people to see things differently. Ultimately, what this is all about, that’s what the Head center does. Now.
If I were just hearing other people talk about things and then deciding to think about them, if I were just watching the news and obsessing over, you know, what are we going to do about XYZ that’s happening with this administration that I can do nothing about. Yeah, that is a poor use of my Head center energy. Now. It’s my process. It’s the manifesting generator process in me of response and me waiting out my authority and operating correctly as myself that allows me to think only about the things that really matter to me. That really holds something for me. That holds something for what I am meant to share here on this show with my clients, with my. With people in my life, right? That’s living in the potential of all of this. So I’ve developed wisdom through all of this.
Pondering through all of the, thinking through asking the questions and hearing the questions from other people asking me, what does this mean? It actually is mine to answer. I just have to make sure that I am not allowing it, allowing other people’s questions to take me away from the things that feel good to me. Am I really, in response, do I really want this? Or am I just obsessed with answering this question right now? Another example of an open head center being a gift and or openness being a gift. Albert Einstein had wide open head, so completely open, and then an undefined Ajna. Now, I want to talk about the Ajna here. So the Ajna, if you have a defined Ajna, you have a fixed way of thinking about things, you got kind of your way of seeing stuff, there’s a box.
And that can make you a really powerful thinker because you trust the box, right? You trust that this is how it is. I think this. Nobody’s going to change my mind. This is my opinion, and it’s going to be mine. And I can form those opinions no problem. They happen very quickly because I have this fixed way of experiencing information and inspiration from that head center. So he’s got that open head that’s wide open, no gates to find. So he has no fixed way. No matter when he’s inspired of experiencing that inspiration, he experiences and always mystery, confusion, doubt, all of them. That pressure comes down to an open Ajna center, to an undefined Ajna center. Now, he founded theory of relativity in like 1907 or something like that, 1905, very long time ago. And, you know, a lot of people know the story.
He was working at a patent office and he had a thought. He had a thought about the speed of light. Could I run as fast as the speed of light if I were running alongside of it? And that’s where he discovered that light would stand still. And he discovers this theory of relativity. And all of this happened, though, through him pondering something that he found wildly interesting. He’s a generator. He was excited about it. He’s sitting at work kind of bored, and his open head started to ponder this idea that he had, this out of the box idea that he had and that led him down this rabbit hole because he didn’t have a fixed way of experiencing information and how he thought and schools of thought. He’s open minded in that Ajna. He was able to see a path that others hadn’t before.
He did it all through thought experiments. This is what I think is so interesting is that, you know, does his chart mean that he’s going to be a scientist? So there are some things in his chart that lean in that direction. But there are other people born around the same time that did not end up being scientists and certainly didn’t discover theory of relativity. So the chart is not going to be so specific that it tells you exactly who you’re going to be, what you’re going to do and how your life will unfold. But it will tell you themes that will be present and only you will know based on response, based on your authority and your strategy of what is going to be the path that you go on, it’s going to be through.
If you’re a generator, it’s going to have something to do with something that interests you, that excites you, that makes you happy, that you just feel so good when you’re engaging with it. It doesn’t have to be the head center. It’s going to be all of these things. Just like it doesn’t mean that somebody who has a defined emotional center and they’re drawn to somebody who has an undefined emotional center. That does not necessarily mean that this is bad conditioning. It’s what drew you to that person. Is it your strategy and authority? Or do they look good on paper? Or are you so seduced by their emotional wave and the fact that they’re really exciting and passionate and maybe the sex is great, you know, that would be not self. That would be not it.
You’re seduced and kind of addicted to how exciting it feels. It’s okay, it’s happened. But that would be an example of not being in alignment with this. That would be an example of not really following your authority. So it’s all about the come from. So I hope that you are going to take a look at your own chart and look at your own openness through new eyes. If you’d like the guide where I kind of break down all nine centers and give you sort of the potential that sits in each one, that you might see yourself through that you might understand it. Just don’t make this a mental game. It’s meant to open your eyes to what is possible for you. What potential is there for you. I always knew I could be inspiring. I just didn’t know about what.
I knew that when I talked about something that I cared about, something that I had deep knowledge of, people really listened and people were inspired to do things with that. It was contagious what I would talk about. And I would inspire people to see something better for themselves. People would come to me from, for career advice. They would come to me for relationship advice always. And there was something about the fact that I could ask great questions, which is another gift of my design. Just I didn’t know I was using it, but it came out in the right times. When I was in response to something, someone came to me, they asked a question. I thought about the question. It was mine to answer. I was in response. It does feel good.
But when we try to break this down into like a true step by step process, then we can get too dogmatic about it. And that’s where we miss the magic. You have to use this as a framework and you’re feeling into it, not thinking into it. But the guide can give you these little windows where maybe you can see yourself a little bit differently. Or maybe you say, I never thought about it that way, and then put it down and then maybe ponder it, maybe let it go. Then go live your life, follow your design and see what opens up for you. That’s where the magic is. So if you’d like the guide DM me “Undefined” on Instagram I’m @nicolelainoofficial or go to nicolelaino.com/undefined you can download it right there. I appreciate you.
