Episode 483
What if the reason your creative process feels hard has nothing to do with your talent—and everything to do with how you’re working against your design?
Many people discover Human Design hoping it will unlock a secret formula for creativity, productivity, or effortless flow. But what if Human Design isn’t here to eliminate resistance altogether? In this episode, Nicole explores one of the biggest misconceptions about creativity and alignment: the belief that being “in flow” means everything should feel easy.
Nicole shares why creativity often requires discomfort, uncertainty, and the willingness to sit with resistance long enough for something meaningful to emerge. She explains how Human Design can support the creative process—not by magically removing challenges, but by helping you understand how you’re naturally designed to access ideas, inspiration, and expression.
You’ll also learn how factors like your authority, environment, definition, and energetic makeup can influence the way creativity moves through you. Through practical examples and client stories, Nicole shows how small adjustments can create more ease, open new channels of inspiration, and help you work with yourself instead of against yourself.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re creative enough, productive enough, or cut out for the work you’re being called to do, this episode offers a refreshing perspective. Listen now!

Episode 483:
Hello and welcome to Unshakeable with Human Design. I’m your host, Nicole Laino, and I’m so happy to be here with you today. We’re going to have a little bit of a different conversation here because I want to talk about a myth I think, that is out there that people, I think when we encounter human design, we initially think it will solve all of our problems, and in some ways it will, but it’s probably not in the way that you’re thinking. And I want to talk specifically about creativity today and creativity and human design’s place in us being more creative, in being able to things like if you want to write a book or a screenplay or you want to write a song, or you want to just be more prolific in what you put out in your business, whatever it is.
If you just want to feel like. If you just want to feel like you are producing the things that they can come out of you, sometimes people will look to human design to figure out how it can make them more creative. And I want to talk about a little bit of the myths that are around this and human design’s actual place in the creative process and how it can support you, just like I said, probably in a way that you’re not thinking about, probably differently than you think it will work. Okay, so before we get started, I do just want to remind everybody, we do these masterclasses every single month inside the Human Design Authority Lab. And this lab, this is our monthly membership where you can get coached by me.
You get VIP sessions with me, you get some human design content in there that’s helping you build your business as well as build it with human design and build it in alignment with human design. We have guest speakers come in, we have coworking sessions. This is all about getting you in alignment so that you can be more creative, more aligned, more productive in a way that feels good and that’s actually driving you towards something that’s correct for you for versus just pushing through to get something done. So it’s awesome. It is super cheap and you can get all of the info on it if you just go to nicolelaino.com/lab or DM Me “Lab” on Instagram and we will send you the details There. Okay, so let’s talk about creativity and human design.

A lot of people have those dreams, especially if you resonate with wanting to be a thought leader. It’s like, well, how do I get my thoughts out? And then maybe you go and you have a human design reading because you’re trying to figure out what is my process for being creative, how can I do this? Some people even go so far as to getting a reading to see, am I cut out for this? And I don’t necessarily look to the chart for stuff like that. I don’t look at the chart for like, is this right for you? Because that’s above my pay grade. That’s your life. Don’t give your power away to the chart. Does it feel good? Is this something that really feels like it’s calling to you? Can you trust that a little bit?
Every person has some element of creativity in their chart. So if you’re an emotional authority, you’re going to be a very passionate person. It doesn’t mean that you will be creative in your output, but it could mean that anything could be interpreted in those type of ways. If you have a motor to the throat, you’re going to have initiating power. So you might be able to start things. If you are a manifester, you’re going to be a trailblazer. So new things are going to come out of you. If you have individual energy in your chart, individual channels, then there’s probably going to be something that needs to be born from you.
So those aspects, and I could name so many others, if you have a defined head center, then you’re going to be thinking about things that eventually you will probably want to put them out in the world in some way, whatever that way is. I don’t know. If you have the channel of talent, then you might have a talent for something artistic or creative. We don’t know. Okay, I could go on and on. I could list off. You could make an argument for so many things in the body graph for being creative, because you know why? Humans are meant to be creative. That’s what we’re here for. We are here to create things. I’m creating something right now. I’m creating this show. The way I create is a little bit different than the way we’d think of creating. I create kind of commentary.
I have responses to things, and then I look at the outside world and I take it in and I figure out how I think and feel about what’s happening in the outside world, in the collective, because I’m a collective person. And then I have thoughts, opinions, ideas, and things that I want to share with the rest of the world. Because sharing is the keynote for collective energy. We could make a case for it anywhere. But that’s not our job with human design, to make a case for us being able to do something or not necessarily. So I wanted to get that out of the way because there are so many misconceptions. Creativity. This is, I think, the big rub here. Sometimes people look to human design because the message with human design is human design will mean no resistance in your life.
That’s not true. It means less resistance in your life. Less. It could mean no resistance in your life. But the no resistance in your life would mean that you’re only following your alignment. And so you’re never doing anything that you should do. You’re never doing anything that you’re obligated to do. You are never moving without an invitation or recognition as a projector. Reflectors are just sort of waiting out that 28 day cycle and that’s a tall order. Most people will not be doing this a hundred percent of the time. So resistance is bound to creep up. But it doesn’t mean no resistance either. It’s what we’re looking for is reduced resistance. What humans get so stuck in is the fact that we’re dealing with resistance all the time. We don’t even notice we’re in resistance. Life just feels hard.
Things just feel not possible for us. Things just feel. We end up bitter and we stay bitter. We end up frustrated and we stay frustrated. And we think that it’s just life. We blame it on the circumstances rather than looking at it and saying, oh, I have the power to change this. When you start to feel what alignment feels like, when you start to not feel resistance, then resistance actually can be a flag for you. This is why getting through that beginning part of the human design journey is difficult for a lot of people. And it’s important for everyone to get through that initial period of readjusting to this new way to opening up honestly to the fact that life can be filled with a lot less resistance than we are used to.
And it comes in these little pockets before you start to really feel what that’s. Which means you’re fumbling around a little bit. You’re in your mind about whether you are in response or whether you are getting recognition. Your strategy and authority is something that you have to think about versus something you feel into, which is really where we need to be in order for this system to work. Now I know Ra would say that human design is so easy, it’s so simple. It is. But we’re not taught to feel, we’re taught to think. And this system is built on feeling, not on thinking. So there’s the problem. So when we’re talking about creativity, so people will come and they want to be creative and they look to human design, because human design says, okay, I’ll experience less resistance.
So even if I don’t think it’ll be no resistance, it’s less resistance, sure. But here’s the truth with this. The truth is that creativity requires that you sit in resistance. Typically, you have to be able to sit in the discomfort of seeing what’s underneath and working through it. Creativity isn’t usually a smooth flowing process. We hear these stories, of course, where if you listen to songwriters interviews and they talk about certain songs that are like magical songs, and they’ll say, the song just arrived. It was just like there. It kind of came out in 20 minutes. The whole structure of the song was there. And then were just fine tuning it and making it, polishing it. But like the song kind of wrote itself. But even those people will tell you, yeah, that’s super rare. That doesn’t happen very often.
They take work and not all of them work out. And that is the tough part about creativity. What human design can do for you in your everyday life is not necessarily taking away the resistance in the creative process. The creative process inherently is with sitting with something even when it’s not coming, or even with when it comes out and it comes out bad and being able to work with it. Now, there are aspects of human design that make some people very good at that part. To sit with something long enough for when it looks like nothing is there, for something to arrive, to sit with something long enough that you make it into what it became. And if you showed somebody where it started, they would never believe you. One of those is the channel of struggle.
The channel of struggle leading from the root to the spleen. That channel is an individual channel. It is the ability to struggle through the creative process. So there is an element in the human design chart. If you have that, then you have the ability inherent in you. It’s something that potentially can come naturally for you. It is something that you have capacity for. It’s a potential for you. Right? But just because you don’t have that, I don’t have that, it doesn’t mean that I can’t be a creative person. It doesn’t mean that I can’t write things. I can pull the charts of a hundred artists that don’t have that channel. So there is no one element that means yes you will be, or yes or no, you won’t be.
And I can pull a thousand charts of people who are not creative, who have it right. None of this stuff is means anything until we put a person behind it. And so if that person, if someone carries the channel of struggle, then they have the potential to be able to sit with something long enough for something to emerge. If they feel like it’s their purpose, if they are a generator, then they also have to have the desire. It has to be something that turns their motor on. They have to be excited about the process. At least. They have to be able to be like yes and follow the yes, not the mind saying, I need to write something so that I can be worthy and I can be an artist and I can be this.
It has to come from something that feels like a yes for them. For a projector, it might be. This is what I want to be recognized for. I’m going to get so darn good at this. Nobody’s going to be able to ignore me. I will be undeniable and I’m going to get good at it. And I can sit here with this. I can sit with the discomfort. I can sit with the resistance. The human design process supports the right things coming through for us. The right things. It doesn’t mean everything will always be easy. Alignment doesn’t mean that alignment means correct for you. I have clients that come to me and we work together on creative projects all the time. And I do have to remind people and I remind myself. Creativity in the creative process is uncomfortable. It is about sitting in resistance.
It is about sitting in discomfort. But our process with human design can smooth this out a little bit. So let’s talk about what human design’s role is or the place of our human design process and how it can help our creative process. By knowing yourself, you can know what not to do. First of all. So one, I know that as a manifesting generator, I have to work with my sacral energy. If my sacral is off, then I can sit in discomfort all I want. And I’m just going to be frustrated. So I need to turn it on with something. I have to be having fun. I have to have a good time. I might even need some distractions.
But maybe I’m containing myself in a room with some distractions that are just going to kind of keep the motor running but not distract me completely where I’m taken out of it. I’m not going to go fold laundry necessarily in the living room. If I know I need to do something in my office. If I’m in my office, then it’s like, oh, maybe I do something here and there’s something that I pick up that makes me feel good. Maybe I use my singing bowls or something and I just kind of get myself into a vibe. This is where vibes come from. This is where lighting candles and doing things that make you go as a generator can help.
I know that my variables that when I try to think about what I need to write or produce, it doesn’t really work that way for me. I need to be in relationship to things. So maybe I’m going to have a call with a friend that I’m going to keep to 20 minutes and I’m going to talk about it. Maybe I’m going to sit with my husband in the kitchen and talk about what I want to be doing. Maybe I’m going to have a partner in this creative project because I’m a split definition and that helps. Maybe I’m going to go and play with my environment of my mountains environment, and I’m going to open up my energy that way. I have a client this week that came in and she said, you gave me that tip about my environment.
And it blew my mind how easy it was. And I was making sitting in my environment actually a reward because it’s a place in her house that she made her environment and it suited her human design environment style. And she’s like, yeah, I would tell myself I could sit there after I worked, and instead I went out there and I worked. And she’s like, and it was so much easier. It was all starting to flow. That’s what human design can do. It can soften the edges of this, it can smooth the path for sure. But you still have to walk it. You still have to show up. You still have to accept that birthing something is a mutation. It is a change. I didn’t have resistance in my pregnancy when I was pregnant, but my body changed.
And it wasn’t always easy and I’m happy I did it, but it wasn’t an easy process. It was a lot. And I would do it over and over again in a heartbeat because of what I got for it. Creativity is like that. This is a birthing of something that you are looking to pull out of you. And human design can tell you how to open yourself up so that the channel is open for something to flow in and flow out. And it can tell you how to remove resistance and how to set yourself up in your environment. Of how do I access my information? How do I access my genius? How does it naturally come out of me? And you might have to try some really unorthodox and different ways of producing this.
If you’re sitting at a desk in the same spot every day and trying to make it happen and it’s not happening, maybe there’s something very counter to your design in that setup. And how awesome would it be if it were that easy, right? Let me change my environment. Let me just have a friend ask me some questions. Let me change how I’m relating to the information. Let me change how I’m doing this. Maybe I’m going to talk it out first, because I have a motor to the throat and it’s easier for me to speak things than it is for me to write things. That is how we work with this, and that’s what human design can do. So it is a magical system that truly can help. It’s just probably not going to help the way that you think it will.
It’s not going to give you some magic pill, necessarily. It gives you ways to work with yourself, and you have to feel into those. You have to experiment. You have to try things and try them in different ways. I have a mountains environment. Sometimes things work for that are very simple, like being on a high floor somewhere. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes that particular environment isn’t for me. If I were to pass judgment one of them that didn’t work, then admit all the ones that did. I need to have a bigger sample before I said, no, this doesn’t work. Right. I need to go sit on seven rooftops and have it not work. And then say, yeah, I don’t think that this is going to work for me. We have to be open to playing with the process. This is an experiment.
This is a living thing that you are in relationship to. You’re designed to the outside world. And when we become really in tune with what turns us on, what turns us off, what puts up a roadblock, what opens the door, then we can really start to have fun with life. When you’re having fun with life, your channel is going to be open. You are going to see more things flow. Why? Because you aren’t contracted. Making anything come through something that is contracted is hard, right? So being expanded and being open is where flow comes from. And we all want to be in flow, right? So I hope that you enjoyed this episode. I hope that it inspires you to sit with the discomfort but work with your design at the same time.
So that discomfort can just be the creative process doing what it is, doing what it does and how it does it. And you aren’t experiencing resistance in any other way that you’re opening the channel in every other way that leads to fun. With this process versus frustration. You have to be able to look at the creative process creatively. Can you look at it from a different angle and say like maybe it doesn’t have to be this way. That has felt so hard and your design can point you in the directions that might be the best way for you to experiment. Like my client with her environment. And that is one of the things that can be One of the easiest ways to play around is with environment.
Look at your human design environment and then go sit in one of those places, a place that fits that style of environment. See what it does to you. Notice if you’re a split definition, don’t try to do things by yourself. Try either enlisting somebody as a partner or go to a public place and go experience the energy of other people and see how it suddenly will connect and give you different access to parts of yourself that you don’t normally have access to consistently. It’s fun, right? It really can be. I hope you go have some fun with it.
