Human Design Motivation and The Shift Into 2026

Episode 436

What if the reason things feel harder than they should right now has nothing to do with discipline, mindset, or effort — and everything to do with an unconscious driver you’re not meant to control?

As we reach the end of the year and begin thinking about what’s next, many people unknowingly slip out of alignment in a way that quietly sabotages momentum.

In this episode, Nicole explores one of the most overlooked and sneakiest elements of Human Design: Motivation. This isn’t about what pushes you to achieve or how to “get motivated.” It’s about the subtle energetic lens you’re designed to operate from — and why being even slightly off here can create resistance, frustration, and a sense that you’re forcing things that should feel easier.

You’ll be introduced to the six Human Design motivations and their corresponding transferences, and how each one influences the way you plan, make decisions, and respond to pressure. You may start to recognize why certain advice, goal-setting practices, or productivity strategies work beautifully for others but leave you feeling disconnected, tense, or second-guessing yourself.

If you’ve noticed yourself feeling oddly stuck, overthinking your next move, or losing clarity as you try to close out the year and look ahead, this conversation will help you identify what’s happening beneath the surface — and point you back toward the energy that allows forward movement to feel more natural and sustainable.

Episode 436:

Hello and welcome to Unshakable with Human Design, everybody. I’m your host, Nicole Laino. And it’s just the two of us today where we are actually going to be diving into one of the sneakier, trickier elements of human design. Obviously, if you’re listening to this, on the day that this episode airs, Merry Christmas. It’s Christmas Eve is the day that this episode will be airing. And obviously we’re getting to the end of the year like we are right here. We can almost taste 2026, right? And we’ve talked about the year of the wood snake. We talked about planning your unshakable year. We went through a whole episode of Breaking Down. I was actually talking about how I was shocked when I did a planning session for my clients, Inside Business by Design.

How many people said that no one had ever taught them to plan their year? Pretty much everybody in the room except for the people who were in BBD last year, and we did the session last year. So we actually created a guide because we got such great feedback from that episode. A lot of people that resonated with a lot of people that they hadn’t really been taught how to plan out their revenue and plan out their activities so that they could have predictable revenue in the new year. So we created a guide for you. We actually create something. I called it the Unshakable Year Guide. And it’s really just some exercises that you can go through to prepare yourself and.

And start to have some forward outlook for the new year so that you are not reactive in 2026, that you can be intentional with the actions that you’re taking. If you’d like that guide, just go to nicolelaino.com newyear or DM me the words New Year 2026 on Instagram. I’m nicolelainoofficial and you can get it over there. So New Year, you can get the guide if you’re still planning. But this is a time. It’s almost like this is the point where we start to lean back a little bit and we’re going to shift our energy into more of an openness of letting go of some of the things of 2025, which there were a lot go to the episode that I did on the Year of the Woodsnake.

But what I wanted to draw attention to because I’ve been noticing this with clients, I’ve noticed this with myself because this is one of the sneakiest elements of human design. I think it’s one of the hardest ones for people to really. You can’t plan for it. There’s no process necessarily for you to be thinking about this all the time. Usually this is an element that you catch after you’re already kind of not in a great place with it. And that’s just normal because it’s so under the surface that this is why it’s so sneaky and why it can really get in your way. I usually notice it when I starting to not feel so great. I’m starting to like I can feel when I’m off with it.

And I wanted to draw attention to this because I think as we are in this interim period between the 2025 year that we’re all trying to close out well, and then the 2026 year that we want maybe to be different or better than 2025 was that can cause a real energetic kind of crunchiness. And this particular human design element I see creep up in everybody’s stuff. So this is something that, you know, with my clients, I always have their charts up, but I’m really noticing this with myself and catching myself in it. And I wanted to bring it to your attention so that you could be aware. Okay. So the element that I’m talking about that’s sneaky is motivation.

Now, if you run your chart on our chart tool, you go to nicolelaino.com chart you’ll run a report on our site and you’ll get an advanced report. You won’t always get these details in the reports from the other chart tools, but ours will give it to you.

So if you don’t know what yours.

Is, if you don’t know what your human design motivation is, then please go run your chart on our website, because I know it will give it to you there. Okay. So the human design motivation is something that we call below the line. It’s underneath. So I’m a five one underneath that line. So even below that level, we’re getting more and more differentiated. This is what we call a variable human sign motivation is a variable. I’m not going to go into all of the details about motivation because I actually did a really detailed episode on this and we’ll link it up in the show notes for you below. But the episode was episode 316. 316.

Variables Series Episode 316: Motivation Arrow: https://nicolelaino.com/podcast/episode316/

It was part of our variable series, where I did a whole series on each of the sections of variable, and we even created a guide and everything for you there. We’ll link that up in the show notes as well. But please go back and listen to that episode. If you’re not familiar with motivation, I’m going to kind of jump into how you work with it and sort of assume that you have the basic understanding of motivation. Okay, so for motivation, why it’s so sneaky. What motivation is in a very short description is in a very unconscious level. There is something. There is a particular way that you feel like the wind is at your back when you’re working or when you’re doing things. There’s a specific way that you are motivated. That’s where the term motivation comes from. Although it’s like.

It’s not an external motivation of like, I’m motivated to get something. This is an internal mechanism that’s saying, like, you are motivated by this type of energy. And when you’re in this energy, things are easy. And when you are in. It’s what we call transference, things will be harder for you. Now, transference is the opposite of your motivation. Don’t worry, I’m going to tell you what they are so you don’t have to know that part. What I notice is that whenever you’re in transference, and this is just global thing, this is, you know, not just me, and this isn’t just something that’s happening at the end of the year, but I notice it creep up at the end of the year. Because whenever we’re in high stress, maybe thinking a lot, thinking will always drive usually into our transference.

That there is a particular way that we pump the brakes, that we make things harder for ourselves, that we want to go in a direction, we want to achieve something, we want to do something, but part of us is holding back because we’re actually approaching it wrong. The. This is honestly really what human design is all about. Human design is all about helping you understand what your way is not the way. Because there is no the way. There’s a the way for you, there’s a the way for me, there’s a the way for everybody else in this world. And it’s a very individual process. What makes it so powerful is, I think so many people have gone through life.

And certainly when we get into a world like when we’re trying to achieve, whether you are in the corporate world and you’re looking to, you know, be a top performer there so you’re ambitious or you’re an entrepreneur where your livelihood depends on you growing and expanding yourself as a human as well as a business person. When we’re committed to that kind of work, we can certainly find ourselves taking advice of other people and finding that advice doesn’t work. But it worked for other people. It worked for, you know, thousands of testimonials that say that it was the greatest thing that ever happened to them. And for us, it falls flat. It’s not you, it’s that the advice. And probably some of it resonated for you, but some of it didn’t. And motivation is one of those things where I think is one of our.

It tells us what our kind of inherent way of getting into the energy of frictionless movement. Okay? That’s really what it represents. You’ll find that if you are in your motivation, like if you are in the energy of your motivation, things will be easy. And if you’re in the transference, the opposite of it, things will be inherently hard. It’ll just. Everything will feel hard. And usually you’ll start to feel a little crazy because on that unconscious level, it just. Everything feels shaky. Right? Okay, so I’m gonna go through what the motivation is and what its transference is. So the transference is what I want you to pay attention to. I want you to pay attention to, am I in the opposite of what I’m supposed to be, which is causing problems for me? So just take note. Okay? So the first motivation is fear.

Now, fear, people. You’re meant to make a plan. If you’re not planning in for 2026, and you aren’t kind of getting your ducks in a row, and you aren’t looking forward to create safety and stability for yourself, then you’re probably not in the right energy for you. Things probably don’t feel great. And the transference for this is need. You’re waiting for something to come to tell you that you need to do it. For something to present itself, for someone to tell you that they need something, you’re more in response to the outside world versus formulating a plan to create stability and safety for yourself. Okay, so if you’re fear and you’re more like reactionary to need, then you’re in your transference. And you want to figure out what would make you feel safe, what would make you feel strong. Right?

The second motivation is hope. Hope, people. You’re just sort of mentally. You’d be like, it’s all going to work out. I know it’s going to work out there’s this positivity. Cultivate that positivity. Right now your transference is guilt. Guilt is where you want to fix things. You want to, like, you want to break it all down and you want to make it solid and you want to. The guilt is like, you want to take on responsibility for so many things that you lose the energy of hope that you’re really meant to be in. So if you are a hope person, cultivating this, like, you know, really looking out and saying, you know, having. How can I get into the energy of. It’s all working out in my favor. Everything is happening. It’s all happening for my highest good. This is great. This is great.

This is great. I don’t know how it’s gonna work out, but it’s gonna work out. You can still plan, you can still do all that, but it’s just gotta be in the energy of like, I’ve got this, the universe has my back. Right? The third motivation is desire. Desire is just, I want it. Don’t do things because you have to. Don’t put things on your plan because they should be there. Put them there because you want them. Have an unbridled and unapologetic list of things that you desire to have. People with desire motivation, they want more and they always want more. And the key is not to feel bad about that because the transference is innocence. When you. Which says, we’ll just do the right thing, Innocence just says like, I actually, it’s not about my wants.

It’s about the fact that this is the right thing to do. And it feels good. It feels good. It feels like we’re doing the right thing, the good thing. So if you’re a desire person and you are maybe feeling bad about having too many wants and you’re saying like, no, I just feel like this is the right thing and, you know, this will be a good thing for everyone. No, not your way. You’re probably going to have a hard time walking with that type of motivation. It’s going to stop you. Okay, the fourth motivation is need. So now we have. Need is the motivation and the transference for this one is fear. So if you’re a need person, you being able to plan everything out to a T probably isn’t going to happen. And if you get all worked up, everybody can still plan.

I still recommend that everybody have an intentional outlook of the things that you are going to do so that you don’t drive yourself crazy. Okay? But a need person is probably going to have a harder time planning super far out and keeping that plan exactly the same because they’re sort of assessing the needs as they go. And we don’t want to get obsessive about, you know, I have to have a plan so I feel safe. That’s not why you plan. You plan to be intentional. You plan. So the energy behind it has to be different. I’m a need person. And if I get too caught up in, like, I’ve got to have it all down, I’ve got it. Like, I don’t feel safe without it. I know I’m in my transference. And transference happens all the time for all of us.

Nobody is out of their transference. I don’t care what they tell you. We’re all in it. It’s just how long you stay there. Do you notice it? I notice it. Sometimes I don’t notice it right away. And I’m like, oh, shit, I’m totally in my transference right now. I’m totally in, you know, what do we do if this bad thing happens? Let’s have a plan for that. Not my way. My way is that I know that I will assess the need when it happens and I will be fine. That’s how I work. It’s so easy for me. When a need presents itself, I just go, it just happens. Right. The fifth motivation is guilt. So now we’re working our way backwards here. Now, guilt, we talked about guilt as the transference to hope. So the transference to guilt is hope.

If you are a guilt person, then you should kind of be looking at what do you want to fix, what needs fixing, what are you going to correct? What are we going to do to make it better for everybody? This is like, you know, a guilt person might be looking at their program or something that they’re working on and be like, how can we improve this? Guilt is like, improving it, but usually not for yourself necessarily. So if you’re in hope where you’re just like, it’s all gonna work out, that’s kind of not your way. Your way is going to be a little bit more critical and less laid back. Guilt’s intense. So if you have that motivation, then look at things like, you know, what can be fixed, what can be improved, and really take a look at it through that lens.

The last one is innocence. So here we go again. Innocence. The transference of innocence is desire. If you are an innocence person and you are having a hard time coming up with a list of all the things that you want, probably it’s because that’s not really what gets you going. That’s not really what motivates you. What motivates you is doing the right thing, what needs to be done, what’s the vision? What’s the right thing to do? I always think of, like, sometimes it’s helpful. It’s almost like when we do the work with the Gene Keys, you know, we can look at the shadow and the gift, but the one that can really give you the full picture of what it’s all about can be the city.

The city can tell us when we go all the way to, like, the highest gift that this can be. It’s like, okay, I get it now. I get the essence of it. And then we can back our way into the lower frequencies like the gift and the shadow, to understand it gives a greater context, I think, with innocence, you know, if we shoot to, like, the. The greater thing for humanity would be, like, the ultimate gift for this, right? So it’s doing it for the sake of everybody else more than yourself. It is a very unselfish energy. And desire is exactly the opposite. It’s the selfish stuff.

So if you find yourself maybe being caught up in other people’s guidance about going after what you want, you know, if you listen to podcasts and you listen to people on Instagram and you read their stuff and you’re watching YouTube and you’re. You’re taking all of this stuff and you see people doing something a certain way that might be their way, or they could be horribly misaligned and just hustling through and making it look good for the cameras, which happens. Let’s be real here. I’m not saying everybody does it, but people do it. For sure. There’s a highlight reel out there. Absolutely. So what I want you to do, though, is recognize that what our tendency can be is to emulate what other people are doing, or, oh, they gave me this exercise, so I’m going to do it.

Or this is how they’re approaching it. I should care about that, too. I should do it that way, too. And that’s not necessarily totally true. I still listen to things, right? I still listen to podcasts. I still take information. I read books. I do all of that stuff. It fuels me in a lot of ways. I have an open head. I have to take things in from others, otherwise I won’t have anything to chew on. It’s just I’m selective about what I do. But I’m also. The whole time, I’m always thinking, is that for me? Is that for me like that, or Do I need to shift it to make it for me? I’m not just blindly taking advice and emulating or trying to copy what other people are doing.

So that’s an important part that I think we can get swept up in the herd. And it’s important. I think motivation is one of those things. Like if you are an innocence person and the advice you’re being given is more about want more, grow, you know, go after it. If your goals aren’t your own and they’re. This goes for everybody, but especially this innocence with desire as the transference. If your goals aren’t your own, where they ring true to you, like this matters, if they don’t matter on like a heart level, then you’re probably in your transference and you’ll find that everything is harder. So as we come to the end of the year, as we are wrapping all of this up, I want you to just notice and going into the new year, notice, am I in this transferred energy?

Because if I am, I’m misaligned on a really fundamental base level. And if you’re misaligned from that level, then you can find it hard to get anything to work on the other levels. Again, I say it’s sneaky because it’s sneaky. It’s really not in your face. You have to pay attention to what’s motivating you, not even what you’re doing. It’s what is the energy beneath the action? Is it in alignment with fear, hope, desire, need, guilt or innocence? And is that your motivation or is it the transference of it? Okay, I hope you enjoyed this episode. Merry Christmas.
