The #1 Misconception with Human Design

Episode 388

Ever wonder why things still fall apart even when you’re “doing it right” with your Human Design? In this episode, Nicole tackles one of the biggest misconceptions in the Human Design world—that following your strategy and authority means everything should go smoothly.  She explains why expecting nothing but ease can actually pull you further out of alignment, not closer to it.

Through real client stories and honest reflections, you’ll hear how Human Design isn’t here to eliminate mistakes, but to help you navigate them with more clarity, trust, and confidence. Nicole sheds light on how different types experience growth, failure, and iteration—and how to stay connected to your process even when things get messy.

You’ll also hear about the pressure to sell Human Design as a fast fix, and how social media culture shapes unrealistic expectations. This episode is an invitation to approach your design with more nuance, more self-compassion, and less fear of getting it wrong.

If you’ve ever questioned your path after doing something that felt “right” but didn’t lead to the result you expected, this conversation will help you see the purpose in every step—even the uncertain ones. Listen now!

Episode 388

Hello, and welcome to Unshakable with Human Design. I’m your host, Nicole Laino, and you and I are sitting here right now together to talk about or what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about human design, and I want to talk about what can be expected from it and how I see it actually really work for people in particular with their business, because that’s who we’re talking to on this show. Mainly entrepreneurs, high achievers, people looking for results in their life. But this, honestly can be, you know, stretched out to the masses of what you can expect from human design. And I really want to tackle this because I’ve seen this misconception, this really common misconception come up with human design and what people expect from it.

Part of that, I think, is, you know, the Instagram culture that we live in, the social media platforms that have only made our attention span shorter and shorter, and there’s such an overflow and abundance of information and of content that we are in a skimming culture now. So unless the hook grabs you, unless the information is getting there so quickly, like, we have you for seven seconds. Okay, can I get there that quick? And I fall into this too, because I want my stuff to get seen. I want my stuff to get hurt. My goal is, can I get you in seven seconds and then remind you that I have a podcast so that you come and listen to the podcast and I can go deeper with you? That’s my formula.

And I do that one because quite frankly, I’m way better in long form content than I am in short form content. I don’t find that the easiest to create because I think that it usually leads to things that it either doesn’t get seen because we’re not positioning it in a way that people are paying attention to it and they scroll right by. And if we do get them to stop the scroll, you know, we’re doing that with some tactics where we’re like, drawing people in with a hard result, a big desire, a big problem, and that just reduces everything to feel like, oh, well, this is the solution for this, and this is this. And human design certainly falls into that.

So when we have that, where we have this short attention span and we’re talking about something as complex and deep as human design, we’re going to miss some nuance. And what that’s going to lead to is misconceptions. What that’s going to lead to is people being like, I thought this would do this for me, or just having in their mind that it should be this way. And then it can end up negating what human design is actually supposed to do, which is take the power away from the mind. And because we thought if we did it right, then we would get a certain result, it didn’t happen like that. So now we’re in our head again wondering if human design works, did I do it right? And that’s not the vibe. So I want to break that down.

I kind of want to talk a little bit about this misconception that I see. It stretches across all types, but it does happen. It’s in a lot of ways. But I’m going to talk about it from the type perspective and from strategy and authority. Because a lot of us are believing that if I follow strategy and authority to a T, then only good things will happen to me. And that’s not true. What following strategy and authority does is it gets you to the next right place. But that next right place might be where something falls apart. It might be where a hard lesson comes. But it’s your lesson that you need at that right time in order for you to move further on the path of your purpose.

But the problem with this, with the way that most people think about human design in a results oriented way. And I get it, I’m going to take the responsibility for my part in this because it’s very difficult to sell something like this. My goal, my mission is to get more people following their human design every single day. I want you to love the shit out of yourself more and more every single day because you understand yourself through this unbiased lens of your design. I want you following it so you are trusting yourself. I want you looking at your kids and seeing who they are, not who you thought they should be or how you thought they should act like you or like somebody else or not do it like somebody else. I want you to look at them for who they are.

My intentions are very pure, my intentions are very good. But the way that we get attention, you know, I have to tell you what human design can do for you. Otherwise people don’t want it, they don’t buy it. I have to tie it to some sort of result. And sometimes that result is just that you feel better. Sometimes that Result is just that you love the shit out of yourself. That’s a result. And we talk about that, but particularly when we start to mix business in this. And now we’re getting into survival, now we’re getting into money, now we are getting into growth, and it’s complicated. Now we’re going to take something energetic and we’re going to put it into our business. And that misconception, if I follow strategy and authority, everything, you know, I’m not going to make any mistakes.

I think that’s a really terrible mindset for any entrepreneur to have, that you won’t make mistakes. I think a better outlook would be to say, when I make mistakes, I can handle it. I followed my process and my strategy into this moment. I don’t look at it as a mistake. I see how it is working for me, not against me. I look for that. I regulate myself. I process the emotions around anything that is happening and then I refine and move on. Sometimes we’re iterating and I don’t think that a lot of people, when they come to something like human design, they’re so afraid of making a mistake that what they do is they think, if I follow human design, then I won’t have to worry about the decisions that I make anymore.

I’m going to make all the right decisions and my life is going to go perfectly. And then when it doesn’t, they get really freaked out and they start to question, does human design really work? Was I following my strategy and authority? Am I doing it right? Oh, my God. Now what do I do? I thought that was the right thing. I was lit up by it. I was so excited. But now I don’t want to do it anymore. What happens now? This all comes from the idea that one decision is going to be like the last decision you ever have to make. That if I say yes because it feels good, that’s what it’s always going to be. And the truth is that we all operate differently. But no one decision is the decision forever. Everything has its cycles.

And there’s so much more to your chart than just the strategy and authority. Strategy and authority. What it’s going to do is keep you out of your mind. Or that’s what it’s designed to do. That’s what it’s supposed to do. It’s supposed to get you out of your racing mind. That’s going, was that the right decision? Was that the right thing to do? I don’t know. Should I do it like this? Oh, my God. I thought that was going to be right. What do I do now? It gets you out of that. But a lot of us, it’s actually the thing that puts us right back in our mind. Why? Because we’re so scared that we did it wrong.

And I think what that points out is how much were relying on human design to take all the bad stuff out of our lives away. Human design can’t fix everything. Here’s what it does do. It does make you feel very confident in the decisions that you do make, which allows you to go all in on those decisions. I had a conversation with one of our clients, Inside Business by Design. And I actually have these like proud mama moments is what they sort of feel like. Because I feel when people get it, I get so excited. And when I see people not fall into traps and keep going and make decisions that feel really elevated and aligned and true, that does it for me. That’s what turns me on. I get super excited about it.

And one of my clients wrote how she realized she tried an offer and it’s not really lighting her up, it’s not really what feels good to her. So she had this other idea which feels right. And so she’s shifting things and she’s changing things and she’s adapting. And I commended her for it. Cuz I was like, I’m proud of you for recognizing that it doesn’t feel good. I’m proud of you for not falling apart when that happened. For you to say, okay, well this is what I have here now what? Like she was able to stay and sit in this and she’s a projector. So even lighting her up, it’s not about sacral lighting up for her, but it’s about what feels right for her, what she wants to be recognized for. And this wasn’t it. This wasn’t fulfilling for her.

It wasn’t making her feel successful. So she was able to look at that misalignment with which is her doing this thing. That misalignment led her to find something that felt more aligned. And then she asked for advice on how to execute on that. That to me is like the most beautiful part of a coaching relationship. She’s doing her work and then she’s coming to me for help to help her through the execution part. And she had some questions about, you know, like how does this sound? And she was looking for some feedback and I gave it to her. And nothing makes me happier than to do that. But what she did and what I was so excited about was I’m like, first of all everybody goes through this. Every offer has an evolution.

Some of them get thrown out and we just say, we never want to do that one again. That sucked. I don’t want to do it again. I’m done with that one. It happens. But most successful offers don’t get to the point of being truly successful because people start questioning things. And every type has their way. She’s a projector, so she’s a little bit more able to sit in reflection than, like, my manifesting generators. My manifesting generators. They’re going to be like, they’re going to go and create nine other things at the same time, and then none of them are really going to work or something’s going to fall off and they’re not going to finish them all. And things aren’t really going to come together. And then they’re going to run in another direction.

They’re going to wonder why things aren’t moving faster for them because they’re doing so much. Manifestors are going to finish something, usually, and then they’re going to be done with it. And then they’re going to wonder, will I ever want to do anything again? What was the point of this? Did it make the impact that I wanted it to make? Yeah, but I’m done with it now. Every type has their way and they have their own way of having an evolution with things. A manifester might throw something out, say, like, I’m done with this next. And the next thing might end up being an evolution of it. They’re probably the type that’s going to work on something the least meaning, like, they’re not going to take an offer and massage it and change it and shift it and do that for like two years.

They don’t have the patience for it. But it’ll come in these, like, bursts of. Sometimes it’ll be a piece of something, and then a piece of something. It’s very creative. Their process doesn’t mean that they can’t work on something long term. It’s probably going to have to change, and sometimes it’s going to have to change completely. They’re gonna have to dream something new up again. Every type has its way and every design has its way of interacting with the world. And human beings iterate things. We shift things, we change things, we make mistakes. Human design cannot save you from making mistakes. But what it can do is make you feel rock solid in your approach to making decisions in the first place. And for accepting that you will either get the result that you want or the lesson that you need.

You will either find the next right step through it. Like, I mean, look at the three lines. Three lines and six lines. You know, a six line in that first phase of their life and then the three line profiles. Any of the threes. You have to iterate. You have to adopt a perspective of. I will either get the result that I want or the lesson that I need. You have to, or you’re going to miss something. You can’t wait for everything to become clear in order to take step one. And for every type, this is different. Projectors will probably have a little bit more of a plan. They will have something in their mind that they’re looking to execute on create. It’ll start to unfold. It’ll happen. Manifesting generators and generators.

You’re going to have to take the first right step that feels good and see what happens. Otherwise you never find out what the next step is. That first step might have been to show you what doesn’t feel right. That first step might have been to give you the 10% of the thing that you just worked on that you want to keep, and you’re going to throw out 90% of it. But in order to get that core 10% that you’re going to take into the next thing that’s going to be so crucial for the next step, for the next stage, you had to take this first step. You had to throw out the 90%. You had to do it that way. The key is that you’re moving in the right direction and that you trust your direction.

I don’t know what the outcomes of my actions will be. I know how I approach it and that’s the most important thing. I know that I’m really paying attention to the fact that I’m in response to something and I’m not just initiating. I know I’m paying attention to the fact this somehow aligns with the vision that I have, which usually will mean that I’m turned on by it. If it doesn’t align with my vision, usually I won’t want to do it. And sometimes when I don’t want to do something where it feels hard, the vision, because I’m a manifesting generator, the vision will turn on the motor and I will get the juice that I need. So I know how to operate in that. But doesn’t mean that I never have to turn back and say, yeah, I got to start over on that.

That didn’t work out. But the act of going through it felt right. And I don’t know it until later on where I’m like, oh, I needed all of that in order to get here. It felt like I was moving backwards, but I was making forward progress. Just didn’t look that way to me. But because I trust in my own process and I’m like, I know that I’m following my stuff because when something goes wrong, I don’t go, oh, my God, what do I have to do now? That doesn’t mean I don’t ask that question. I just catch myself in it and I say, that’s not how I make decisions. I don’t make decisions like, oh, my God, I’m so scared. What do I do now to fix it? That’s not a good place to make decisions.

So I come back and I say, well, I’m making a decision right now because I’m afraid. So how can I come back to my center, feel all the feelings that I’m feeling, and then wait for something to respond to tell me where to move next? I don’t worry about mistakes. Sometimes I recognize that when I’m curious about something, when I’m thinking about going in a certain direction, when I want to do something and it’s not happening, I’m like, I’m trying to make it happen, and that’s not my way. Human design can save you from so many more mistakes than you would even know you could have been making, usually because it’s stopping you from letting your mind drive you in a direction.

But this misconception that there are no mistakes that will be made, that you’ll live this life of pure alignment and nothing will ever come in to your life that disrupts things, is a myth. But what it can do is make you unshakable. It can help you understand where you’re making decisions that are completely out of alignment for you because you’re making them the wrong way. It can make it so when the storm comes or something doesn’t work out that like my client, you can sit and you can ask really good questions of yourself and you can make a decision that feels right to you, and you just see it as, this is just feedback. It’s just feedback and data. To say that you don’t need feedback and data in order to live a life of alignment, that’s just silly. We’re humans. We have experiences.

Those experiences nurture us. They teach us things. We learn and grow from them because we reflect on them, and then we make better decisions. It’s not from the mind. It’s from our own personal evolution of nurturing. Ourselves through this stuff. So I wanted to clear that up because I see that so often people are just. They get so rattled by making a decision and having it not go the way that they planned the universe. Your purpose is probably not what you think it is. I say this all the time. Your incarnation. Cross is not a destination, a point on a map that once you realize what it is, you think you know where it is. And now all you have to do is just make all the right turns to get there. No, that’s not how it works. You live in alignment.

You make decisions according to your strategy and authority, even when they don’t make sense, even when it seems like things are not going your way, even when it just feels like this is completely out of left field. I don’t know why I’m doing it, but it feels right that your purpose shows up, that it’s knocking on your doorstep. It’s probably knocked several times, but you’ve ignored it or had some idea about where you should be going or how that step towards your purpose would fit into the plan that you had for your life. And you ignored it. And you went in the direction of your thoughts and your mind and your ego and your conditioning. Human design gets you to tune out that noise. You’re not really meant to think about your purpose necessarily.

You’re meant to follow what feels right, do what feels good to you. I like to think about your purpose in the sense of, like, it just to make you feel maybe more validated in the direction that. That your soul feels like it’s calling you into. I’ve worked with a lot of people recently who are at a crossroads in their life. They’re making big decisions, they’re changing things. And it’s scary because that means ending some things. It means some things going away that maybe you created and provided a lot of stability in their lives. And now they’re going to say goodbye to it in favor of the unknown. Scary.

What has made them feel more comfortable, to feel protected in these choices, to feel really aligned with this vision that feels scary is the fact that we’ve sat down in these readings and I’ve kind of told them all the things that have been on their heart. I’ve read to them in their chart, and that has created at least a feeling of validation and safety. And it doesn’t mean that the decision and the course doesn’t feel scary, but it’s a different kind of scary because it’s kind of that, like, okay, I feel like I’m getting signs. I feel like I’m not crazy for thinking that I might be meant for this thing that made me feel really big.

It maybe makes them feel safe to do the thing without necessarily knowing not just how it’ll work out, but maybe how they’re even going to do it. Right. It’s if you’re doing something new, you might not have the tools yet, you might not know exactly how you’re gonna execute this whole thing. But knowing that you’re on the right path, knowing that you are so aligned with this vision that it’s really yours, that’s powerful. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be tough times. Alignment does not guarantee never ending peace and happiness and fulfillment. And it guarantees that you will get there. But it doesn’t mean that every step is going to be cushy, comfortable. And that’s just what I wanted to say. Have courage in it, be able to sit with things and from a neutral place, say, did I follow my process into this?

So if I followed my process, then even a mistake is somehow working for me. It’s somehow guiding me toward what is right and good for me. If I didn’t follow my process, did I learn something about my process that will keep me from making this mistake? In this error in decision making? Again, it takes reflection, but it has to come from a neutral place. You can’t be in panic and do that, otherwise you get shitty answers. So I hope that this helped. I hope that this helped clear some things up for you. If you were feeling any of this, I appreciate you as always for being here with us. Thank you so much. And remember, in order to have an unshakeable business, you must first become an unshakable human. So thanks for letting us help you become unshakable with human design.

We’ll see you next time.
