Hello and welcome to the limitless entrepreneur podcast. I am your host, Nicole Laino. And I am here with a special guest. Today, I am here with Hillary deceiver. She’s an award winning entrepreneur, a transformational coach, and the CEO of the relaunch Co. And she’s a featured speaker in Silicon Valley at conferences nationwide and is also a relentless philanthropist. So Hilary, welcome to the show. I’m so happy to have you here.

I know, I know, the pre interview kind of where we just we chat a little bit. It’s always so fun. But you know, we’ll take we’ll take the magic from there, and we’ll build on it here. I have full confidence in both of us. Tell them a little bit about you. What did I miss in that in that introduction? What What would you like the listeners to know, before we get started?

Hilary DeCesare
I think that when you think about like my journey, and we all have our own journeys, but you know, mine really started out in the corporate, you know, as a corporate girl for over, you know, 10 years in a fortune 100 company, and then did the whole tech thing in the Silicon Valley and started down the path of really wanting to impact others and help them through all the things that I learned and how I had managed people and the growth and the leadership and things like that. So I ended up doing my own businesses raised money, you know, had had acquisition offers went through all have, you know, these, these kind of like interesting times during that, you know, the heyday, the boom of the.com and, and then when I decided to really do is continue to always coach and help entrepreneurs, CEOs, executives along the way. So I would do this no matter what I was doing. And what I found is through divorce, through having melanoma through losing my mom through, you know, getting remarried with stepchildren, and all this is that I’ve relaunched myself a lot, and I have lost my sanity regained my sanity. But along the journey, I have been able to come up with a pretty incredible methodology called the relaunch effect that I took from all of my years in business, all of my coaching of, of, you know, really successful people in the business world, and I created something that works in not only the business field, but in your life and in your relationships. And that’s what it’s all about, right the lifestyle that you can have. And so when you start talking about, you know, what kind of lifestyle you really want, and what’s holding you back, we know, for certain that life is going to throw you those curveballs, we know it and there’s going to be setbacks, but it’s the grace and the grit of getting through those that really matter.

Yeah, and I you know, I love that you bring that up that it’s, it’s the lifestyle that you want, that should be driving this. And that’s the vision, the vision isn’t just the money, the vision isn’t just the business, it because that ends up being just very one dimensional. And not, it’s not sustainably motivating. And it’s usually pretty shallow. And until you start looking at like, what’s the life I want to create? What’s the world I want to live in what what does like my ideal life look like, you can find a hard time finding your way, because it all just feels kind of kinda like, you know, just not not terribly inspirational. And I love I love kind of that that perspective that you come from where you know, looking at the different parts of your life. And you know, you don’t talk about your relaunch from just a business perspective perspective, you talk about it from your divorce, you talk about it with the loss of your mom, you talk about it, you know, with your kids, and, and all of these different ways that people kind of have to reimagine their lives a little bit and take a step back, I’m assuming as part of the process, that it isn’t just to go in perpetual motion. Yeah. And we just talked a little bit about that.

Well, and we also talk about, you know, I don’t believe in failing forward, because when you fail forward, it could hurt, you know, you get that bump on your head, we don’t want to fail and like fall on our faces, we want to fail upwards. So I always say, you know, the relaunch way is to fail up. And what does that really mean? It means, again, embrace the failures, and there are silver linings, always with those whether it’s just like, okay, cross that off the list. I’ve done that I have, you know, hey, we don’t need to repeat that one again. It’s when you put the blinders on and you don’t assess what’s really taken place or learn from it or find the silver lining. That’s when you became you become stuck, you become like, overwhelmed, you become like in this position where, what should I do next? I think right now especially having, you know, been in this COVID world for a year now, what really I’m seeing is that people have had a chance now to reassess their life and reassess where they are, and where they thought they would be at this point, for many, it’s not where they are. And so what I what I love to do is Yes, first step is, you know, there’s seven steps. And the first step is to reset, it’s like this, you’ve got to like, really, you know, there’s two different you’ve got to release and reset for some resetting is the first step for some it’s releasing. And either way, you got to look back and understand the value that was in so many of the relaunches that you’ve gone through, whether it’s, Hey, my company tanked last year, I wasn’t, you know, I didn’t make the revenues, I did 20%, you know, of what I had done the year before, or I had to completely pivot and it’s not quite worked out, as well as I thought, or the people that are having like, great success one month, but then they, you know, have a lot of revenue, and then no revenue, and then revenue and no revenue. And it’s that constant battle. And so what you have to be looking at is what what has happened in the past that has gotten you where you are right now, and what is not really truly serving you at this point. And that’s really what you have to do initially, when you’re looking at a relaunch,

and the inventory of you know, what’s happened, what’s been happening, or what didn’t why what, you know, really taking a good strong look at that. And, and I feel like and just curious if you agree but but with this great pause that happened with COVID over the last year and and you know, the pandemic shutting our lives down, quite literally. And people had different reactions to it, and some people their lives chugged along, you know, kind of uninterrupted in some way. And then some people really felt that that stagnation. But one of the things that I noticed is that it just caused a lot of people to really reassess and, and look at, like, Is this really what I want? Is this really, this is not my beautiful house. This is beautiful, if I think of that song all the time. But But is that, you know, we’re moving so much in normal times, that there’s no time to reassess anything, because it’s just like, Well, I gotta go to work. You know, got this business, I got these things. But this one forced us all to kind of go whoa, is this my choice? And do I choose to go back

to it? Well, and right now, the there is a great article that I read that more companies, more businesses are being created right now, because people are taking their hobby, their side hustle and taking it to the next level. Because, again, it goes back to that, like, I’m not really where I thought I would be at this, you know, at this point in my life. And Simon’s that, you know, they’re saying midlife and people are like, yikes, yuck, I don’t want to be there. But when you think about what midlife and we call it, the relaunch company or midzone. When you talk about your midzone, it really can be anywhere from you know, you’re 30 years old, you’re 40 years old, you’re 50. It’s that point where you have the ability to write the second half, you have that right now, this is your opportunity. And we have had a chance to change things up right for so many people. I agree with you that, you know, our heads were down, we were going through the motion, we were on autopilot. We were doing our jobs, we were doing our family doing our life. And then all of a sudden, everything got mixed up the box was, you know, it’s like a snowglobe right? Everything got mixed up, which means, which means you have the ability now to decide, what do you want to put into your snowglobe What do you want to put into your life now? How do you want to design it? And so I you know, I laugh because I talked about step one, step two, but let’s talk about the redesign. That is that is one of the steps of the relaunch effect and it is about choice. It is about you having the ability and I can’t tell you even yesterday, I’m on a group coaching Hall and this incredibly powerful woman and As you know, at this point, I thought my life was going down this path. I thought that, you know, hey, I’m a corporate leader, I’m making amazing money, you know, six to seven figures every year. And yet I have this burning desire to go and really, like start this, this idea that I’ve been like, you know, it’s been percolating up, especially, she said in the last year, I asked her, I said, Well, what’s stopping you? And you know what her answer was, I have all of the knowledge from my corporate from running a p&l from sales and marketing and leadership. But I don’t have the first clue on actually the steps associated and my own fear my own limiting beliefs are getting in the way that I don’t know if I could do it. And I said to her, I said, Okay, so you are running, you know, $100 million p&l, you know, in this in this wonderful company. And yet, you’re thinking that you can’t actually start up a business. And she just, she looked at me, and she’s like, Yeah, when you put it like that, it does seem a little crazy. And I said, what if there were 10 steps to get you there, that you knew you wouldn’t fail? What would you say? She’s like, I’ve quit my job right now. And I started. And that’s what I think people need to realize is that you have I talk a lot about the three H’s, and it’s the heart to the head to the higher self. And what does that mean? There are people that you know, they’re they trust their feelings, right? They thought gut that like, Ooh, I just, you know, I’ve got that that feeling about the situation. And there’s others that are all in their head. And they’re really looking for like, logical reasoning like how common they go, they have that you know, the habit battle, they have this battle in their head of like, should I should I not, should I should I not. And then got this higher self, which is, you know, all of the incredible universal truths and universal laws out there that can help you so much. And when you incorporate all three in, that’s when the magic happens. That’s when and so we went over this yesterday. And all of a sudden, I said, you know, so where are you right now? Are you all in your head? Are you in your heart? Are you trying to absorb the fact that yeah, this could actually happen for me that everybody has that clean slate, I had a business with a business partner of mine, it was called white space ink I NK. And the idea is you got this whiteboard, and you’ve got this, like you know, your pen, just start to create start to start to understand that you are the only one blocking progress. That’s so cool. And so you redesign redesign what you ultimately really want. And yes, you don’t just quit your job right now, if you’re, you know, starting to think about this, there’s, there’s a process, there’s a great way to be able to do this, but like don’t don’t hinder yourself from opportunity.

Well, and we are the thing that stands in our way, pretty much in everything, because you know, this is the limitless entrepreneur podcast where we, you know that the the core belief is that we are limitless at our nature. And when we get out of our own way, then we are able to be that limitless being. And so I love that you that you present that. And I think what’s what’s good for people to hear too is that you always think that somebody, if I only had their experience, if I only had that job if I only had the income where I could save the money like that person can and there’s all these answers. But the ultimate reason that you’re not doing it is because of some way that you’re thinking you’re thinking about the outside thing that’s holding you back, you’re thinking about if I only had x, then I could do Y. And that’s just your brain keeping you where you are and keeping you safe. And, you know, I love that you call it white space, because I actually use that term a lot because i i I feel like we don’t give ourselves enough white space in general, that we’re trying to create, in a busy world with busy calendars with busy minds. And busy minds are not the ones that come up with and are able to see and envision a full idea that comes from whitespace. That comes from the pause, which I think is why everybody’s having so many ideas right now. And they’re like, You know what I would love to do, but we get stuck. So like your client, there’s probably getting stuck in that space of, you know, we can envision the future because sometimes we’re too afraid that we can’t have it, but it’s much safer to not even see it. You’re just gonna like it. I don’t know, I don’t even know what that would look like and blow it off. And it’s like no, you’re not. You don’t want to see it because you’re worried that you can’t make it happen, and so much easier to not get hurt?

So I’m moving as we discussed the termite inspection, right? That before you before you can officially sell your house. And it was really interesting, because it’s, you know, you said, Oh, wow, you know, everything looks good foundation looks good. And it reminds me this is such a key important conversation is that when your foundation is solid, right, when there aren’t those, you know, those those termites, those, you know, what I call bugs at relaunch its beliefs under ground surfacing? And it’s your bugs that happen, right? They come up, and they come up, usually, at the most inopportune time. I mean, it’s always like when, you know, you’re starting to like, like, we were talking about this gal, like, she’s starting to really think about it, and then the bugs come up, like, oh, you can’t do that you don’t have experience for that you don’t know what you’re doing, you know, you’re gonna fail. And you’ve had such a great successful career, too, you want to fail, do you want to have that on your resume? And we started to talk about that as well. And I have a program that I take people through called belief, blasters, and I’ve always been fascinated with, with the mind, and I was a psychology major in college. And then I ended up continuing that on with a lot of neuroscience and classes and certifications around it. And what I realized is that there is a process that you can take yourself through to get rid of your limiting beliefs. And what doesn’t work is the whole willpower thing where you’re like, I’m just, I’m gonna go for it, I’m not going to do it, I, you know, I don’t have that, you know, that idea of, you know, I’m not good enough. But it still will come out, you can only use willpower for so long. So what we really like to do is when you’re, when you’re thinking about giving yourself time, space, I love the idea as an entrepreneur, of taking time and actually putting it on your calendar. And it doesn’t have to be long period of time, but 15 minutes even, to just say, alright, I’m an some would call it meditation, some would call it literally like the white space time, where you sit there and you say, Okay, I’m just going to clear my like, okay, just take that deep breath. And what do I just want? What what do I need help with right now in what I’m trying to create, to build and, and give yourself the quiet time to be able to listen to what is actually coming in. Because there will be when you start to do this over and over, you’re going to be like, Oh, my God, I completely got a really good, they call it the hit, right, I got a great hit. And most people have these hits. In the middle of the night, when rain is quiet, and you’re like, I should be going to sleep. I should be asleep. But I’m awake. Like thinking and then all of a sudden, you’re like, Wow, that’s a great idea. And then you wake up in the morning, you’re like, what was that great idea? Yeah. Can’t remember that anymore, or?

Nicole Laino
Yeah, no. And I think that that’s a great sign too. Like I always say, I get clients that say that all the time. They’re like, I get all these ideas. You know, I wake up at three o’clock in the morning with this amazing idea. And I keep a notebook now by my side, so that I can write those things down. Because I I tell all my clients that I was like, keep notebooks blank in your nightstand because you’ll use it or write it on your phone, I find it easier to write on a piece of paper than type when I’m half asleep. But that’s usually a big sign that you’re not giving yourself enough space during the day that you’re not giving

richer 15 minutes down because there is scientific proof that doing this actually increases your brain power increases your ability to remember things increases like all of these amazing things, just by literally taking those few breaths, giving yourself the ability to say that this is my quiet time. So you put your phone on mute you you have you know everything Do Not Disturb. And you just you just be you just allow yourself that white space.

Yeah, and you know, it can be meditation, it can be like I actually I’ve started scheduling time for walks where I get out of the house because I think that that’s a really important thing. I was forgetting to go outside because we’re inside all the time and my husband loves to do food shopping like that’s kind of like his his meditation as well. He you too. He going to our local grocery store and buying all the food which I hate doing. So I’m perfectly happy having him do it. But when I don’t have to go out and there’s no place to go, then I would be like, I haven’t left the house. And like three days, I’ve just been on Zoom meetings, and I went and got the mail. But that’s kind of it. And I was like, that’s not good. And I can usually tell like, I start to feel it, I’d be like, I don’t feel right. Something’s wrong. I haven’t been out of the house.

I am right there with you. That is one of the reasons we’re moving to Colorado, because I’m like, I need to have space, I need to be able to go out. Versus when, you know, we had a place in San Francisco. And it was like, you know, the cement and walk in like, yeah, I need I need just like to take a deep breath. That was funny, we went and had dinner with my stepson, and his girlfriend last night. And as we’re driving over a bridge, I’m like, Oh, my God, it’s been so long since I’ve done this. Yeah. Crazy. Like, and this is why I said, this is your snowglobe like, shake it up. Like something, create something, that if you weren’t happy with a part of your life, or a part of your business, or this is your opportunity, this is truly your opportunity to try new things to do that redesign of being able to now realign which is another step of the relaunch effect to realign with what you really believe in your heart. Remember those like, you know, the head to the heart, the higher self, in your heart of what you really feel like you should be doing?

Are there questions people can ask themselves? Are there are there ways that they can kind of approach this process to get started? Where you know, for the person who’s listening right now, and they’re like, you know, do I need a relaunch? What, you know, because I guess one, the backup question to that would be, does the relaunch have to be like a complete overhaul of my life? Or can the relaunch be, you know, something small, like a small pivot, where it’s like, I thought I was going in this direction, but I’m sort of being pulled this way. Like, what’s the question they can ask themselves where? Because I think what people are, what I hear a lot is, you know, I don’t want to have shiny object syndrome and have my head turned by every like, hands, man that passes by, because I’m married. But But I, I feel like this might be right, how do I know the difference between distracting myself from my path or recognizing when it’s time to shift?

So first and foremost, you absolutely can have what we call mini relaunches and mega relaunches, right and everything in between. And relaunches happen all the time, you’re constantly in a state of relaunch. And for the bigger ones, that those are the ones that you really have to assess the situation and working through a process like the relaunch effect, it just helps you get through it in a much more graceful way. And it gives you that grit to know like, Okay, step one, step two, great, I did that I need to now go into the next step. But this was such a great question. Because how do you first and foremost get started with a relaunch just to assess so that you don’t have, you know, shiny objects are not the squirrel out there, you know, trying to you know, another nut, another nut, what we what we have is we really push on your G zone. That’s your your zone of genius. And it’s not just the zone of genius that matters. It’s your gratitude zone. It’s your greatness zone. It’s that ability to really look within, right, you got your three H’s, the heart that had the higher self. And what makes the biggest difference is when you can sit there and say, Is this does this feel right to me? is am I am I totally in my head right now? Or is this you know, really about this, like higher self, this is all in alignment with what I should be doing? It’s a really interesting question. It’s like, where are you leading? What are you feeling? What are the the push backs, and I always like to start people, when they start to document their June sound, they start to put down their strengths, what they love what people are telling them, that they’re really good at you when you focus, and it’s the 8020 rule, right? When you focus your time in that G zone and spend a majority of it like if you can really try to be 80% in your G zone. That’s when you’re going to get the biggest results for yourself in getting through and also being able to discern, is this is this a distraction? Or is this something that could really potentially change my trajectory? And that’s where It gets. So it just, it starts to flow, right? I always talk about, you’re going down the river of life, and you’re in this canoe and the canoe is made of this bright light, and you look down in your light, crap, there’s no oars. What am I supposed to do? And at that point, you kind of like, throw your hands up, like, what am I supposed to do? And at that moment, that canoe keeps flowing down, it keeps moving. And when you try to force something, that’s when things don’t work out. And so for people that are like, you know, it’s, it’s not about, should I go right, or should I go left, the relaunch process is really going from that, like that inner core, and we talk about the inner core in our business courses, which is the consistency to be able to show up, it’s the organization of the processes around how you’re going to do that, that kind of the A to Z, so you know, what the heck you’re doing. And then it is the R, which is all about, like the results that you’re ultimately getting, but it’s getting super clear, that it may not be in the order you think, and how you’re gonna get there. And then it’s your energy of how you actually are going to bring, you know, bring yourself and when they when they talk about 95% of the truly successful people that are out there in corporate world executives, entrepreneurs, they have a mindset that is 100%, at that highest level of operating, it’s like, and, and people are like, well, you know, how do you get there? How do you get to that point where you have that energy, because people can say, it’s exhausting. It’s exhausting to be, you know, to be happy all the time, or it’s exhausting, you know, exhausting to be ignited, we call it you know, ignited and getting fired up. And the fired up entrepreneur. So it’s interesting, because you have limitless, I’ve got fired up, very, very similar. And it’s so great. Because when you really can have that mindset of that, you know, that the champion, the Olympian, it’s possible 100% of the time, but it is a muscle, you got to build into it. You can’t. And I think that’s where people get so frustrated, they’re like, Well, I tried it for a week. Well, it’s like, well, I went, you know, I tried to run and I ran, you know, half a mile and about killed me, you got to keep it going. And so the same thing you have to do with your mindset.

Yeah, there’s some reason that for when we think about something physical, like building a physical muscle, we understand that it will take time, we understand that, you know, if I want to lose 50 pounds, there’s going to be a lot of work that goes into that to transform my body, from what it is now to what I want it to be to this inspiration photo that I have tacked on a vision board someplace reminding me that this is what I want to look like, it’s gonna take a lot of work, it’s going to take a lot of a lot of, you know, exercise and diet and lots of change. But when it comes to changing our minds, and changing ourselves and changing our results, we think that it should be like instant, we think that you know, you sign up for a course and someone tells you that like in seven days, we’re going to have you here and it’s like, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is and see change. What what what really you should be looking for is seeing the incremental change in yourself and feeling that feeling like okay, I see where this is going I see I understand the unfolding of a transformation like this. And as you start to understand that you can start to believe in the greater vision that you see for yourself. Because it’s okay as I unfold, I understand I that’s where you can start believing your success is inevitable.

Okay, this is you are speaking my language a seven day unstuck challenge. I didn’t say how to get unstuck in seven days. What I did I want to challenge people seven minutes a day for seven days to get started like to understand I’m all about the relaunch company is all about the foundation foundation foundation foundation because too many times you try to bypass the foundation because it’s not you know, it’s not as much fun as like you know, hey, I really want you know that cherry on top but you got to go down and you got to you know, have the bottom and then you go up to the you know, different levels and finally you get there and so, what I really encourage is take the small steps, like you said it’s the small steps then then you get to this understanding of like, okay, now I get why my life’s been a roller coaster. I now understand. I get stuff I have revenue one month and then I doubt I bring money in and It just immediately, you know, leaves, I can’t get to that place of, I’m riding that like wave and right that that slow build up, it’s like, you can’t just have that, you know, I think of like, at Disneyland, you know, the roller coaster, California where it just goes straight up, right, and then it goes crashing down. Yeah, we want to have it be a little bit more in the flow. So that you understand that there are their core, there’s the foundation for everything for your personal growth for your business, for your relationships. And when you and when you start to master that, you know, forget about like the NBA, forget about all of these things that you know are going to give you you know, the high level we want, we want you to have core, we want you to have that like inner core of being really solid.

Right, because there are quick wins, quick wins, you can get great bluebirds are great, right? Trans transformation takes time. And that’s, that’s I think, the differentiation that sometimes is missing with people that, that they’re they, they put a timeline on the transformation. And they’re paying attention to what’s not happening rather than paying attention to the little, the little changes that are happening in them. Because when you’re not paying attention to that, you’re not allowing the little transformation to happen in your mind, you’re in the old mind thinking because you’re thinking about, well, this isn’t working for them, this is taking too long, I’m not seeing this, I’m not seeing that. And it’s that’s that’s the game, that’s really what we have to start. That’s the shift, that’s the first shift is paying attention very closely to what’s happening. And seeing those little, those little changes in ourselves that open us up to see how the big change happens.

transitions to transformations. I mean, that’s what it’s all about. Small transmit just little incremental steps, small transitions, and hey, those transitions, that’s a win, that is like those, that’s time to celebrate the little transitions, because then all of a sudden, you realize, I’ve really changed. And then you realize, oh my gosh, I just had I’m, I’m transformed. And that is I mean, it’s the great you being a coach, you get this when you have that happen with your, with your client, with your students with I mean, it is just, I think probably one of the best things I’ve done is I’m I’m on the board at Cal Poly, which is university out here in California. And I’ve taught classes and all of that. And when I have these kids come in, and I take them through the process, and I help them understand the foundation of business and everything. It’s like you watch them the transitions throughout the course, where all of a sudden, it’s this huge transformation at the end. It’s like how it’s, it’s such a beautiful thing and where students are, you know, these kids are so open to it, when you can open yourself up to you know what I talked about the midzone again, right, we got the G Zone, we got the mid zone, we got all these zones, but when you really talk about and you’re honest with yourself, and you’re like, all right, I want the second half to be better than the first. How am I going to make that happen? That is like it’s all about transition.

Yeah, and that is the addicting part for me too. Like I have clients where I say to them all the time I’m like, You look different to me physically like you, you’ve the way you look has changed because so much has changed internally that it like takes my breath away at and how bright and excited and unstoppable you are now like there’s just there’s an aura about you that shifts and to think that I had some small part and that is just the greatest gift to say I’m grateful would be the huge understatement that I get to be part of that it’s it’s an amazing amazing thing. But Hillary this this conversation was just we we covered so much but I still feel like we were we were very very targeted in really helping people I think understand when a relaunch is necessary what that really means and I think we also gave some people maybe permission to think about a relaunch themselves to not just keep going in a direction because that’s the way I’ve been going and that’s what I committed to and really, you know, giving them some tools to check in and see how they can see if Do you know if a pivot is right if a relaunch is right for them so thank you so much for coming in.
